Discover the Unique Charm of the Magnolia House

Nestled within the serene beauty of Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, the Magnolia House stands as a testament to the basic definition of history: change over time.

When most people think of a plantation home, they envision something like Tara from Gone With The Wind. However, the Magnolia House at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens offers a different experience—one that reflects the much longer story of Southern history on either side of the antebellum world from which Hollywood plucked its grand facade.

Nestled within the serene beauty of Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, the Magnolia House stands as a testament to the basic definition of history: change over time. Constructed after the devastating fires of its predecessors—the first house burned in 1810 and the second was burned in 1865—this third iteration of the house was built in a different era, providing a unique glimpse into the last 150 years of history along the Ashley River. This house began as a small summer cottage, but additions in the late 19th and late 20th centuries have transformed that cottage into the home which dominates the landscape today.

Embarking on the Magnolia House tour is like stepping into a time capsule. You’ll explore the period between 1870 and 1975, discovering how the people who lived here navigated changing times and put their own stamp on the home. Each room, each artifact, tells a story of resilience and adaptation, offering a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Magnolia Plantation and its inhabitants.

It’s important to set realistic expectations about what you will see and learn on this tour. Unlike many plantation homes, the Magnolia House’s entire existence comes after the end of slavery. However, that does not mean that slavery and its legacy play no part in the story. The stories of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the plantation grounds are an integral part of the Magnolia House narrative. Their presence and contributions are acknowledged and honored throughout the tour, enriching our understanding of the plantation’s history.

Join us on the Magnolia House tour for an immersive journey across the centuries. Each corner of the house holds a story, bringing the past to life in captivating ways. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply curious about the unique history of Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, the Magnolia House tour offers a distinctive and enriching experience.
