Join us at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens our Juneteenth Freedom Day events.
We're kicking off with a complimentary Campfire Conversation on Friday, June 21, from 7-8:30pm. This moderated discussion, hosted by our Director of Interpretation, George McDaniel, and founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, Joseph McGill, will delve into the meaning and history of Juneteenth.
On Saturday, June 22 from 10am-4pm, step back in time with Living History, including cooking demonstrations, storytelling sessions, and gospel performances, all included with Garden Admission. This event, in partnership with the esteemed Slave Dwelling Project, offers a unique and educational experience.
Juneteenth marks the anniversary of Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger’s “General Order No. 3,” which enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. President Biden designated Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021, commemorating over 150 years of African American celebrations.
One of the event highlights will be a performance by the local gospel group, Oh Happy Day. Their inspirational and educational show will take attendees through the history of gospel music, complemented by local vendors like This Little Piggy BBQ.
Join us for a unique and creative experience on Sunday, June 23, as we host two special sweetgrass basket-making classes with Jennifaye of Geechee Gyal Baskets! Whether you're a seasoned artisan or trying your hand at this traditional craft for the first time, you're in for a treat. Classes will be offered at 11am and 2pm.
Light refreshments will be provided to keep your creative juices flowing. Spaces are limited to the first 25 tickets sold per class, so be sure to secure your spot early! All materials will be provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and creativity, and let's make some beautiful baskets together!
Please note: This event will take place rain or shine. Tickets for this event are non-refundable. No exceptions.
