meet the animals

Meet our great horned owl, Fern. Fern has been in our care since the summer of 2008. Fern is here because she was hit by a car, resulting in neurological damage and complete blindness. Owls rely heavily on their eyesight while hunting at night, and oftentimes, rodents hang out near roadways due to trash on roadsides. Because of this, owls colliding with cars is an unfortunate reality. Due to Fern’s inability to navigate by vision, we provide her with ease in her enclosure, with lower perches and keeping the placement of the perches the same. You will oftentimes hear Fern whistling before she is fed in the evenings, anticipating her prey item!
