Meredith Bean is a Wildlife Biologist with the SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program, which is responsible for managing and protecting endangered and threatened sea turtles in South Carolina. Program Biologists coordinate two large networks of volunteers who work to identify, count, and protect the state’s sea turtle nests and respond to all reports of sick, injured, and deceased sea turtles along the entire coast. The program has been monitoring these threatened and endangered species since the 1970s, which has ensured coastal decision-makers have accurate data depicting long-term trends to make informed management decisions to best protect and conserve sea turtles for future generations. Meredith spends her time in the field on remote barrier islands to find sea turtle nests, works with many volunteers, and enjoys raising awareness for how people can help protect sea turtles along our coast and in our waterways. This event is not only an opportunity to learn from an expert in the field but also a chance to understand how each of us can contribute to the protection of these incredible creatures.
